This past weekend my husband and I got to have a wonderful day date. We dropped E off at my parent’s house for the day and set out on a spontaneous road trip with no real destination. We used to do that all of the time before E so it was nice to just get away and not worry about the million things you have to worry about when you have a little one in tow.
Our first stop was at the Dark Horse Brewing Company in Marshall, MI. It was a small little place with so much character. We ordered a beer flight and tried 5 of their craft beers. I was so proud of my husband because he isn’t a big craft beer fan and usually wouldn’t be interested in trying the different beers. But he did and even found one he liked! My favorite was a Raspberry Ale.
The place was so busy, we ended up sharing our table with another older couple. They seemed to be regulars and filled us in on all the happenings of the place. Apparently they show movies outside on the patio in the summer, so if you’re local, that would be pretty cool to check out! And I also hear they have heated toilet seats in the woman’s room, but I forgot to check it out on the way out! It was unconfirmed if the men’s had heated seats! Ha ha ha.
We had a loose plan in the beginning of the day that we would venture to the Lake Michigan coast and check out some wineries. It was a bit of a drive and because we are old tired parents we decided against it. It was also a mutual agreement that we are really more brewery people than winery people anyway! AKA not very classy.
We ended up in Kalamazoo, MI at Bell’s Brewery. We ordered a couple drinks and sat at the bar. While we were there a big group of people came in and we found out they were on a walking tour with West Michigan Beer Tours. There are so many breweries in the Kalamazoo area and this would be a fun way to explore them! I’m going to put that on my list for future adventures for sure.
We realized we had been drinking a lot of beer but hadn’t really eaten anything so we decided to go to HopCat because I heard they had poutine (fries, gravy, and cheese). Not only poutine but poutine with perogies!
The wait was long, but we put our name down and decided to walk around a bit. It was in the 40’s which is super warm for Michigan in the winter! Like almost no coat weather! Haha. We came upon a park and a little pond with a ton of ducks which made me miss my baby! I was sad because I knew she would have loved to see all these ducks! So I acted like a crazy person trying to take pictures of the sleeping ducks to show E later. Motherhood is crazy, ya’ll. Can wait to get away and then the next minute you wish they were there. It’s how it always is.
We finally got our table and more drinks and of course our poutine! There was a girl sitting at the table next to ours who was judging us so hard! We got two appetizers and she was starring at them like “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe they are going to eat all that.”
I love my husband though because when I said something about it after they left, he just said “Yeah, she was probably jealous because she was on a date and was probably starving!” They were obviously on a date and awkwardly sitting next to each other on the same side of the table. Those days are way behind us. I need my room, yo!
It made me feel relieved that I never have to do those awkward firsts dates ever again because I found someone who will eat all the poutine with me 😉
By that time, we had eaten and drank so much I was just ready to go home and put some sweatpants on!
It was a wonderful day and reminded me how important that one on one time with my husband is. We get so caught up in doing everything for our little person all the time that it was nice to focus on us for a change.
I hope you all have a Happy Valentine’s Day and get to spend it with the ones you love!

Loved this blog! You are absolutely right about the one on one time with your spouse after the family comes. No guilt about needing time away, maybe the little tikes need tine away from their parents too, so everyone wins!
Glad you guys had a great time!

That sounds like so much fun!! I am more of a winery girl myself (not a huge beer fan) but that ale sounds good. I love all the wineries in Traverse City, but haven’t been to any others. I will have to check some other out that are closer to home.
